Former UNC basketball standout Theo Pinson has been named G-League Player of the Week

Long Island Nets shooting guard Theo Pinson has been named G-League Player of the Week following three performances last week that saw him average 21 points, 10 rebounds, 6.7 assists, and 1.7 steals in 36.5 minutes per game. He shot 23-for-50 (46 percent) from the floor, and 9-for-21 from three-point range.

In a 117-110 victory over the Wisconsin Herd last Tuesday, Pinson scored a game-high 32 points on 12-of-19 shooting from the floor, and 4-of-7 from long-range. He pulled down nine rebounds and dished out three assists in 36 minutes of play. He followed that up with a 16-point, 12-rebound performance against the Windy City Bulls three days later. He hit 7-of-17 shots on the night, and recorded a game-high six assists and two steals in the 107-97 win. Pinson finished the week off with a 15-point, 11-assist, nine-rebound game against Sioux Falls. He only hit 4-of-14 shots from the floor, but knocked down 3-of-7 from beyond the arc in a team-high 38 minutes.

The former Tar Heel and Brooklyn Nets assignee was named to the 2018-19 All-NBA G League team as a rookie last season. That was over 34 games in which he averaged nearly 21 points, six rebounds and six assists while shooting better than 38 percent from beyond the arc, and 84 percent from the free throw line. He hasn’t spent nearly as much time with Long Island this season, having made 28 appearances with Brooklyn in year two, as opposed to just 18 as a rookie.

For the season, Pinson is averaging 16.4 points, 6.8 rebounds and 4.6 assists while shooting 46.5 percent overall, and nearly 40 percent from three. He’ll likely continue to split time between Brooklyn and Long Island this year as he works on his consistency from an offensive standpoint.
