Roy Williams will retire

A sad day is coming for all Tar Heels fans. It’s very unlikely that Roy Williams will be the head coach for North Carolina when the next decade starts. It’s been a tenure filled with fan more ups than downs, and three seasons ending in Tar Heel players cutting down nets in April.

Williams has been legendary in his time as a Tar Heel. He showcased continued excellence, and led the program with pride. He will finish in the top three all-time in ACC coaching wins, and somewhere in the top 10 all-time (women’s basketball included).

It’s a moment that nobody is ready for, but we all know it’s coming in the near future. In his 17 years with North Carolina, he’s only missed the tournament on one occasion (prior to the likely miss this season). He’s been the face of North Carolina basketball for the better part of two decades, and that will continue even after he’s gone — much like his mentor, former UNC head coach Dean Smith.

A pair of 2021 UNC targets might be aiming at a package deal. light. Related Story
