UNC basketball drops another home game, as Tar Heels fall to Boston College in Cole Anthony’s return to the court

Jared Hamilton scored a team-high 18 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the floor, and Boston College beat North Carolina by a final score of 71-70 at the Dean Smith Center on Saturday night.

Hamilton knocked down 3-of-6 three-pointers, and 3-of-4 from the free throw line off the Boston College bench. Former Duke guard Derryck Thornton added 15 points, three rebounds and three assists, while freshman guard Jay Heath scored a dozen.

The Eagles shot 26-for-56 from the floor, and 7-for-18 from beyond the arc. They got outrebounded by the Tar Heels by seven, while committing 15 fouls and 23 turnovers, but made enough plays down the stretch to survive and even their record at 11-11. They now sit at 5-6 in Atlantic Coast Conference play.

Freshman point guard Cole Anthony returned to the UNC lineup for the first time since December 8 after having arthroscopic surgery on his right knee to repair a partially torn meniscus. He scored a game-high 26 points on 5-of-14 shooting, and 2-of-8 from the three-point line. He connected on all 14 of his free throw attempts, while adding five rebounds, three assists and two steals on the game.

The Tar Heels got double-doubles out of Garrison Brooks and Armando Bacot, and a 12-point outing from senior guard Brandon Robinson. Brooks and Robinson combined to hit just 10-of-31 shots on the game, while the former missed all seven of his free throw attempts. Robinson left the game with an leg injury with just 17 seconds remaining in the second half. His X-ray after the game came back negative, and he’s been diagnosed with a sprained right ankle.

North Carolina hit just 36 percent of its shots for the game, and a putrid 4-of-19 from downtown. The Tar Heels assisted on just nine of their 22 buckets, and missed nine free throws. They had a chance to win the game on the final possession, but didn’t call a timeout, and apparently drew up a play similar to something you’d see at the local YMCA on open gym night.

They fall to 10-11 with the loss, and 3-7 in conference play. They’re back in action on Monday night when they travel to Tallahassee to play the fifth-ranked Florida State Seminoles.
