UNC Basketball: Tar Heels top Cavaliers at Carmichael Arena

After losing to NC State on the road, UNC basketball gets back on track in home game against the Virginia Cavaliers

Janelle Bailey led all scorers with 23 points, and North Carolina beat Virginia by a final score of 78-68 at Carmichael Arena on Thursday night.

Bennett hit 10-of-17 shots on the night, and pulled down a game-high 17 rebounds for the Tar Heels. Madinah Muhammad added 17 points and three rebounds, and Malu Tshitenga scored 16 on an 8-for-14 shooting performance.

The Tar Heels shot 47.6 percent for the game, and 35.3 percent from three-point range. They committed 20 fouls and 16 turnovers, but did assist on 18 of their 30 made field goals for the game. They improve to 15-6 on the season, and 6-4 in Atlantic Coast Conference play.

The Cavaliers were led by senior guard Dominique Toussaint, who scored a team-high 16 points. Jocelyn Willoughby scored 15 points, and pulled down 12 rebounds, while Shemera Williams and Amandine Toi added 14 and 13 points, respectively.

Virginia hit just 24-of-66 shots for the game, and 4-of-18 from beyond the arc. The Cavaliers’ 38 rebounds matched that of the Tar Heels, and they committed fewer fouls (19) and turnovers (14). They also outscored North Carolina by 10 points in the fourth quarter, but a poor-shooting first quarter had them down by 13 points early in the game. They fell to 8-13 overall, and 3-7 in conference play.
