UNC Basketball: Dikembe Mutombo’s son, Ryan, talks Tar Heels
Ryan Mutombo, son of Naismith Hall-of-Famer Dikembe Mutombo, talks recruiting and the UNC basketball program
Dikembe Mutombo is an eight-time NBA All-Star, and four-time Defensive Player of the Year. He was a third-team All-American at the University of Georgetown in 1991, and he’s still remembered for his patented finger wave.
His son, Ryan, is an up-and-coming prospect in the recruiting class of 2021. He’s been working on improving his game over the past season, grown nearly two inches and put on about 25 pounds in that time. In doing so, Mutombo has been getting more attention from coaches and scouts, and that will probably continue to be the case over the next year of his recruitment.
In a recent interview with Rivals’ recruiting analyst Dan McDonald, Mutombo talked about the scholarship offers that he’s currently holding, the schools he’s interested in and the impact that his father will have on his recruitment.
He spoke specifically about the University of North Carolina, the school that he says was his ‘dream school’ as a child.
"“UNC was always like my dream school growing up,” Mutombo told Rivals. “Obviously I know all the history of Roy Williams and all the great players that have come through there, whether they were 1-and-dones or 4-year players. A lot of great basketball players have come through their program. It’s like a brotherhood there and one of the best programs in the country. I know they are struggling right now without Cole Anthony, but I know there is a great mind behind that program.”"
Mutombo is a 6-foot-11, 215-pound center out of Lovett School in Atlanta, Georgia. He’s currently a 3-star prospect ranked 203rd in the nation according to the 247Sports Composite. He’s No. 23 among players at his position, and 16th in the state of Georgia. The Top247, however, has Mutombo ranked 62nd in the nation, 10th among centers and No. 4 in the state.
He’s currently got offers from Appalachian State, Georgetown, Georgia Tech, Richmond and Indiana State, but he’s also been receiving interest from Florida State, North Carolina, Ole Miss, Stanford and Virginia. Mutombo has stated that he doesn’t plan to make a college decision until late in his senior season.
