UNC Basketball: The 9 lowest lows of the Roy Williams era
4. After 59 consecutive home wins against Clemson, North Carolina loses in dramatic second half collapse
It took 94 years and a total of 60 games before the Clemson Tigers beat the North Carolina Tar Heels in Chapel Hill, but it finally happened in January of 2020. Amid a two-game losing streak, and having dropped seven of the previous 10 games, the Tar Heels blew an 11-point second half lead that eventually turned into a 79-76 overtime loss.
And it wasn’t just that the Tar Heels finally lost a home game to the Tigers that hurt so bad, but how they lost it. In the closing minutes of regulation, the Tar Heels seemingly forgot how to play basketball; something they’d done fairly well for the entirety of the game to that point. Missed shots, missed opportunities, miscues and just about anything else that could take place in the final four minutes did.
Maybe worst of all, was the horrible decision by North Carolina not to foul Clemson with under 10 seconds remaining in the game and a three-point lead. In his postgame interview, Roy Williams took responsibility for the mistake, saying that it was his fault for not reminding his players to foul in that situation. He also went on to say that University of North Carolina Athletics Director Bubba Cunningham should probably fire him.
"“We’ve had some great moments as a coach and right now I’d say this is my lowest one because losing this game was my fault,” Williams said. “Told them if I die tomorrow or 20 years from now that’ll be the biggest regret I had in 32 years as a coach. Cause these kids really need a win. And their coach let them down today.”"
How much did the loss really mean in the big picture? Not Much. It was a winning streak that the program and its fans cared about, though, and a loss that won’t soon be forgotten. It turned out to be quite symbolic of the Tar Heels’ 2019-20 season, but there’s more to come on that later in this list.
