5-star UNC basketball target Ziaire Williams includes Tar Heels among five finalists

The North Carolina men’s basketball program already has the No. 3-ranked recruiting class in the nation, according to the 247Sports Team Rankings for 2020. It could get even better for the Tar Heels, though, if 5-star small forward Ziaire Williams commits to North Carolina.

Many fans assumed that North Carolina was out of the Williams sweepstakes, what with the Tar Heels’ star-studded recruiting class that claimed all available scholarships that the program has to offer for next season. But the talented wing out of Chatsworth, California blew some serious holes in that discussion after the release of his five finalists on Monday night.

A Twitter post from Tipton Edits claims that Williams is focusing on just five schools — down from his previous list of seven — and that update has been confirmed by Jeff Goodman, Jeff Borzello and Adam Zagoria, a trio of college basketball’s most trusted insiders. The Tar Heels are joined on his list by Arizona, Oregon, UCLA and USC. And while the inclusion of North Carolina comes as a bit of a shock, the four Pac-12 schools are less than surprising.

"“I’m just taking it day-by-day,” Williams told Zagoria. “My mind’s all over the place so when the time comes, I’ll let everyone know. . . They’re all great schools. They’re all throwing their pitches on how they can help me succeed and I’m just waiting for that feeling and that instinct. Just waiting for that one school to come in my gut and just rock with them.”"

The 6-foot-7, 175-pound senior from Sierra Canyon High School is ranked No. 5 in the class of 2020. He’s first among players at his position, and third in the state of California. The longer that Williams’ recruitment draws out, the better it is for the Tar Heels, who could potentially free up space on their roster by season’s end.

There’s no current timetable for an announcement from Williams, but Keeping It Heel will have updates on his recruitment as they become available.
