UNC basketball program offers scholarship to 5-star center from class of 2021

Roy Williams and the North Carolina Tar Heels are quickly building one of the deepest, most talented front courts in all of college basketball, and they’re still looking to it.

On Wednesday, the Hall-of-Fame head coach offered a scholarship to class of 2021 5-star center Chet Holmgren, a junior at Minnehaha Academy in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The offer came just hours after Williams was at the school — which was his first trip to Minnehaha — but his staff has been watching Holmgren for some time now.

The UNC coaching staff watched Holmgren play at the NBPA Top 100 Camp in Charlottesville, Virginia last June where he, coincidentally, went head-to-head with class of 2020 Tar Heels commit Day’Ron Sharpe. Both players performed admirably, but it was clear that Holmgren was a player to keep an eye on. North Carolina assistant coach Hubert Davis followed that up with a visit to Minnehaha in December to watch Holmgren play.

A 7-foot, 190-pound big man with a versatile skill set that allows him to dribble, shoot, block shots and affect the opposition with his long, wiry frame, Holmgren is drawing attention from some of the biggest names in college basketball. He’s already got over two-dozen scholarship offers from the likes of Baylor, Florida, Florida State, Gonzaga, Kansas, Memphis, Ohio State, Tennessee and Texas. And that list will continue to grow as time goes on.

"“. . . Chet doesn’t back down to anybody,” Minnehaha head coach Lance Johnson told Inside Carolina. “I’ve seen him when he was a little guy playing against college kids. He’d be getting hit in the face with braces on, he’d tear out something that was loose in his mouth, and then say ‘I’m ready to go again.’ He’s super tough. That just comes from…it’s his mindset.”"

Holmgren is the No. 4 prospect in the class of 2021 according to the 247Sports Composite. He’s the top-ranked center in the class, and the No. 1 player from the state of Minnesota.
