Class of 2020 UNC basketball commit R.J. Davis has strong showing just one game after breaking Westchester County scoring record

Just two days after his record-setting performance against Rutgers Prep — a 32-point, 10-rebound effort that made him Westchester County’s all-time leading scorer — UNC basketball commit R.J. Davis showed exactly the type of play he’s bringing to Chapel Hill next season.

The 5-foot-11, 164-pound combo guard from Archbishop Stepinac poured in 31 points on a 10-for-16 shooting night, leading the Crusaders to a 68-55 win over St. Francis Prep. He connected on all 10 of his free throw attempts following a 15-for-15 performance from the charity stripe the game before. He also pulled down seven rebounds, and dished out three assists.

Davis is a good ball handler, and can drive the lane with speed and efficiency. He’s good at creating his own offense, and setting up teammates to get theirs. He’s got quickness in the open court, and on the fast break, and can hit shots from all over the court. He’s also a good rebounder for his size. He’s good at getting to the free throw line with regularity, and converts a high percentage of his shots there.

Perhaps the most valuable asset he’ll bring to North Carolina next season is his ability to play the lead guard position. The Tar Heels have been thin in the back court this season thanks to injury and inexperience, and an extra guard with a versatile skill set like Davis will be nice to have on the roster.

Davis is ranked No. 58 overall in the 247Sports Composite for 2020. He’s the eighth-ranked player at his position, and the No. 2 prospect from the state of New York.
