The UNC Baseball program will open up the 2020 season ranked in the Top 25 by D1Baseball.com as they released their preseason poll

The North Carolina Tar Heels’ men’s basketball program wasn’t the only team to have their season end to Auburn last year. Just a few months after they lost to Auburn in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament, the Diamond Heels fell to Auburn with the chance to reach the College World Series.

UNC gave up 13 runs in the top of the first inning in Game 3 of the Chapel Hill Super Regional, ultimately ending their season and hopes of returning to Omaha. The loss is one that has stayed with UNC all Summer, Fall and now Winter long as they are itching to get back onto the field in 2020.

When they do hit the field in February, the Tar Heels will be ranked as one of the top teams in the nation.

D1Baseball.com released their Preseason Top 25 poll for the 2020 season and the Tar Heels are one of eight Atlantic Coast Conference teams ranked. Louisville leads the way at No. 1 in the poll followed by No. 3 Miami, No. 12 Florida State, No. 15 Duke, No. 16 N.C. State, No. 18 Wake Forest, No. 19 Georgia Tech and No. 23 North Carolina.

While the Tar Heels won’t be the favorites to win the Coastal Division or the conference as a whole, they should at least be a contender. The Tar Heels return a lot of talent from a team that went 46-19 a year ago.

Can they make another run at the College World Series and host a Super Regional? We will find out soon enough as the Tar Heels open play on Feb. 14.
