The UNC Football program is ranked inside the Top 20 in the 247 Sports’ Way Too Early rankings for 2020. Find out where they landed.

The 2019 college football season is officially in the books with the LSU Tigers taking down Clemson in the College Football Playoff title game on Monday night. It ended what was an exciting season full of surprises all over the country.

But now the long wait is on for Week 1 in 2020 as we are 233 days from kickoff.

There will be a lot to discuss between now and kickoff in 2020 including recruiting, Spring Game, transfers, etc. Right away though, a lot of publications have put out there “Early Top 25” for the 2020 season months before the coaches and AP Polls will be released.

In almost every single one, the North Carolina Tar Heels were featured and they were ranked in a decent spot. Coming off a 7-6 season including their first bowl win since 2013 there is a lot of excitement surrounding the football program as Mack Brown goes into his second year in his second stint as head coach.

UNC will return a lot of starters on both offense and defense including quarterback Sam Howell who put together a fantastic freshman season. With most of the starters returning and a Top 20 recruiting class publications are high on the Tar Heels. That includes 247 Sports who released their way too early Top 25 just a few days ago.

They have the Tar Heels at No. 19 overall, which is the highest ranking among publications so far.

Included in the article is a breakdown of every five teams, including the Tar Heels:

"Maybe we’re too high on the Tar Heels? But after the ACC Coastal has produced seven different divisional winners over the past seven seasons, we believe North Carolina can restart the cycle in 2020 with Sam Howell returning at quarterback. …"

The Tar Heels are one of just two Atlantic Coast Conference teams that are listed in that Top 25 with the other being No. 1 Clemson. They do have two opponents in 2020 that is listed on that Top 25 including No. 24 UCF and No. 11 Auburn. UNC opens the season at UCF and then a neutral site game in Atlanta vs. Auburn.

Of course these are not official rankings but it’s nice to see some publications give respect to the Tar Heels after their 2019 campaign.
