UNC women’s hoops rolls past Virginia Cavaliers in Charlottesville
Janelle Bailey scored 16 points, and was one of five Tar Heels to score in double-figures on Thursday night, as North Carolina beat Virginia 65-47 in Charlottesville. The win improved North Carolina to 11-2 on the season, and 2-0 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. Virginia, on the other hand, fell to 5-8 overall, and 0-2 in ACC competition.
Bailey hit 7-of-12 shots for the game, and 2-of-3 from the free throw line. She added five rebounds, three steals, a block and an assist in 38 minutes of play. Senior guard Madinah Muhammad added 11 points, five rebounds and four assists for the Tar Heels, while Shayla Bennett, Taylor Koenen and Malu Tshitenge each scored 10.
North Carolina converted 27-of-61 (44.3 percent) shots from the floor, and 8-of-24 from three-point range. They lost the rebounding battle to Virginia by six boards, but committed two fewer fouls and seven less turnovers. The Tar Heels went to the free throw line just seven times for the game, converting three. They also recorded 12 steals as a team, one shy of their season high.
Lisa Jablonowski, Shemera Williams and Jocelyn Willoughby scored 12 points a piece for the Cavaliers. Virginia shot just 36.2 percent for the game, and 21.4 percent from long-range. They were 2-for-4 from the charity stripe in a game that featured just 11 combined free throws for the game.
North Carolina will take the court again on Sunday afternoon when they face off with the Virginia Tech Hokies in Blacksburg.
