UNC Basketball: Analyst has 5-star target heading to Pac-12 school
By Zack Pearson
Where does the UNC Basketball program stand with five-star forward Ziaire Williams in his recruitment? It doesn’t look good.
The recruitment of five-star small forward Ziaire Williams has been an interesting one for the past year or so.
Williams has taken an unofficial and official visit to North Carolina, traveling across the country from California to Chapel Hill to take in the University. For a while it appeared as if UNC was the frontrunners to land him for their 2020 class.
But then the Tar Heels landed five verbal commitments from Day’Ron Sharpe, Walker Kessler, Caleb Love, R.J. Davis and Puff Johnson. The Tar Heels are currently out of scholarship spots right now but we have to imagine that if Williams wanted to come to UNC, head coach Roy Williams would find a way to get it done.
As Williams’ recruitment has dragged out over the past few months, other schools have gotten involved and improved their chances. The thought now is that UNC isn’t the favorite anymore but still in the race.
The favorite? Well, it’s a PAC-12 school according to a Rivals recruiting analyst.
Corey Evans was asked about a prediction on Williams right now and where he thinks he will land if his recruitment ended today. He offered up his answer for Arizona in the Twitter Tuesday column:
"Arizona. The Wildcats have been my FutureCast selection for over a month now and nothing has made me change my prediction. Ziaire Williams caught up with our Krysten Peek last week and just as I had suspected, he will likely take an official visit to Oregon in the coming weeks before making his college commitment during the winter.North Carolina is all but out for Williams if he decides to commit before the late signing period, especially seeing that the Tar Heels are currently out of scholarships"
That’s not good news for the Tar Heels who apparently are still recruiting Williams as he mentioned in a recent interview. But it appears as if he will end up in Arizona or on the West Coast.
Evans also added another option for Williams, saying he wouldn’t rule out the recruit going overseas to play.
Williams is expected to make his decision sometime in Winter 2020 and right now it doesn’t look good for UNC.
