UNC Football: Chazz Surratt leads Tar Heels on All-ACC Team
By Zack Pearson
The UNC Football program placed 11 members on the All-ACC Teams that were announced by the conference on Tuesday morning
When it was announced that Chazz Surratt would be making the position switch from quarterback to linebacker this offseason, it was hard to predict what we should expect. The North Carolina staff and Surratt felt like this move was the best for his career and it’s paid off.
After spending the first two years as a quarterback, Surratt now finds himself on the All-Atlantic Coast Conference First Team as a linebacker. He led the ACC in tackles this season and earned his spot on the team, marking the only Tar Heel player to be named to the First Team.
Surratt’s fantastic season is a big reason as to why the Tar Heels are 6-6 and bowl eligible for the first time since 2016. He’s come up big and was a bright spot on a defense that has been shaky over the years. Surratt finished the year with 110 tackles and received 144 votes for the first team. His brother, Sage, was also named to the First Team for Wake Forest as a wide receiver.
In addition to Surratt, the Tar Heels had a few others make the All-ACC teams.
Wide receiver Dazz Newsome and offensive lineman Charlie Heck were named to the All-ACC Second Team Offense. Newsome finished the regular season with 64 receptions for 947 yards and 8 touchdowns. He was the go-to guy in UNC’s offense.
Freshman quarterback Sam Howell was named to the All-ACC Third Team Offense along with running back Michael Carter, and wide receiver Dyami Brown. Defensive tackle Jason Strowbridge was named to the Third Team Defense.
Howell was among the top quarterbacks in the conference in just his first season with the Tar Heels. He completed 60.2 percent of his attempts for 3,347 yards and 35 TDs with only seven INTs. His 35 touchdowns are the most by a true freshman in FBS history.
Javonte Williams, Carter (all purpose back) and Myles Dorn were named Honorable Mention by the ACC. You can see the full list of teams here.
The Tar Heels now await their bowl assignment after beating N.C. State 41-10 to become bowl eligible over the weekend. For more on the UNC Football program, please check back with Keeping It Heel.
