NBA Hall-of-Famer’s son is hoping to hear from the UNC basketball program

Roy Williams and the University of North Carolina men’s basketball program just pulled off one of their greatest recruiting feats in the Hall-of-Fame coach’s 16-year tenure at the school. Their 2020 recruiting class is ranked among the best in the nation, finishing third in the 247Sports Team Rankings behind just Kentucky and Duke.

The Tar Heels may not yet be done with their 2020 recruiting class, but they’re already working on what they hope will be another dynamic group in the class of 2021. They’re keeping tabs on a number of players, and have scholarship offers out to a few, but it’s still extremely early in the process.

One prospect in the class that’s hoping to hear from the Tar Heels is Ryan Mutombo, the son of former NBA star and Hall-of-Famer Dikembe Mutombo. In a recent interview with 247Sports, Mutombo named a few programs that he’d like to hear from during the recruitment process, and North Carolina was one of them.

"“I’d like to hear from UVA, UNC, Kentucky would be nice, all of the big schools that kids dream about when they’re growing up,” Mutombo said. “I think it would just be like an awesome experience to get to visit one of those top schools.”"

Mutombo is a 6-foot-11, 215-pound center out of Lovett School in Atlanta, Georgia. He’s currently a 3-star prospect ranked 198th in the nation according to the 247Sports Composite, but he’s No. 62 in the Top247. He’s currently got offers from Georgetown, Georgia Tech, Richmond and Indiana State, but don’t count on his list of schools to stay that small.

It’s safe to say that, as of now, Mutombo is flying under the radar with scouts and coaches. By the time Mutombo’s senior season rolls around, I expect the talented big man to rise up recruiting boards, and get offers from some of college basketball’s top programs. Whether or not one of those programs will be North Carolina is yet to be seen, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Tar Heels take a look at a legacy player with the skill and athleticism of Mutombo.
