Pair of UNC football standouts earn ACC Player of the Week honors

The University of North Carolina football program picked up its sixth victory of the season on Saturday night, and became bowl eligible in the process. It’s the first time in three seasons that the Tar Heels will participate in a bowl game, and that the win came against one of their most hated rivals, the NC State Wolfpack, made it all that more special.

In the 41-10 thumping, UNC put on an offensive display against the NC State defense that fans in Raleigh will want to soon forget. After trailing the Wolfpack 10-6 at halftime, the Tar Heels came out of the intermission and scored 35 unanswered points. Sam Howell, who had maybe his worst stretch of play this season in the first half, put on a performance in the second half that rivals some of his best games.

The true freshman quarterback finished the game completing 23-of-33 passes for 401 yards and three touchdowns. His 401 yards are the ninth-most ever thrown by a UNC quarterback. And the interception that he threw was just his seventh of the season. For his outstanding performance, Howell was named ACC Rookie of the Week for the sixth time this season. His 3,347 total passing yards this season lead the Atlantic Coast Conference, and rank 12th among Division I quarterbacks. His 35 touchdowns are fourth in the nation.

UNC sophomore wide receiver Dyami Brown was named ACC Receiver of the Week after his performance against the Wolfpack on Saturday. He reeled in six catches for 150 yards and a touchdown. He had a 25-yard-per-catch average, and a long catch of 52. For the season, Brown now has 46 receptions for 947 yards and 11 touchdowns. And he’s got an outstanding average catch of 20.6 yards. The honor for Brown was his second of the season.

Howell, Brown and the Tar Heels now await news of their upcoming bowl game, which will likely be played some time late this month.
