UNC Basketball: Tar Heels offense in a slump to start year
By Zack Pearson
The UNC Basketball program is struggling to score points early on this season and it’s been historically bad at some times
The North Carolina Tar Heels’ suffered their first loss of the season on Thursday afternoon, dropping their second game of the Battle 4 Atlantis Tournament to Michigan. After UNC jumped out to an early lead, it was pretty much all Wolverines from there on out.
Michigan then used a 19-0 run to all but end it for the Tar Heels as they lost 73-64.
There has been a common them with this UNC team through the first six games of the 2019-20 season. It’s been scoring.
We all know that the team has relied on freshman guard Cole Anthony, he’s been fantastic, but they are going to need more production from other spots. Sure, it’s early on but this is a problem that is happening and it needs to improve.
By only scoring 64 points in the loss on Thursday, UNC has now achieved something they haven’t done in over 30 years. They have yet to score 80 or more points in a single game through the first six of the season. That hasn’t happened since 1982-83.
It’s not like UNC has had much tough competition with all due respect to their opponents. Both Notre Dame and Michigan have been their toughest opponents to date and both held them under 80.
This goes back to not having enough scoring outside of Anthony and the one or two that show up on a consistent basis. The problem goes back to guard play as both Garrison Brooks and Armando Bacot have been fine in the post.
If UNC doesn’t get any more production early on, they could find themselves in trouble once again.
