The UNC Basketball program has shown interest in a West Coast five-star forward in the 2020 recruiting class but as time goes on, it appears as if he will stay out West

The North Carolina Tar Heels’ have five recruits currently signed to their 2020 recruiting class which is ranked No. 3 overall per 247 Sports. All five commits signed during the early signing period earlier this month.

With UNC’s class pretty much set, there is one target that would be remotely interested in the Tar Heels.

UNC has shown a lot of interest in five-star forward Ziaire Williams, one of the top players in the 2020 class, but in the recent weeks that interest may have dwindled a bit. The Tar Heels might not have a scholarship set for Williams after signing five players but he’s the type of player that Roy Williams could find another scholarship for if he did decide to come to UNC.

There was also a point where it appeared as if Williams was destined to land in Chapel Hill despite being a West Coast recruit. He has visited Chapel Hill a few times in his recruitment and there is interest between both sides.

But where does he stand now?

Williams’ recruitment has been a little quiet of late after he didn’t sign during the early signing period. With UNC having a five-man class and Williams playing in Arizona, the Wildcats might be in the driver’s seat for him.

In his Twitter Tuesday column, Rivals reporter Corey Evans was asked about Williams and his recruitment to date and offered up this answer:

"If Ziaire Williams’ recruitment ended today, I think he would end up at Arizona. I do not expect him to leave the West Coast, especially with North Carolina seemingly out of scholarships at this point.Oregon has a chance, but the Ducks are playing catch-up. UCLA is also in the hunt but the Bruins are in a similar position."

Evans went on to say that Arizona currently has the momentum in the recruitment which isn’t good news for the Tar Heels. Everything now points to Williams staying on the West Coast compared to going out East which would essentially rule out the Tar Heels.

Williams does intend to make his decision sometime in 2020 and it’s something we will continue to monitor in terms of the Tar Heels.
