UNC Basketball: No timetable in recruitment for 5-star forward
By Zack Pearson
Don’t expect a decision anytime soon for this UNC Basketball five-star target in the 2020 recruiting class
With four players committed to North Carolina’s 2020 recruiting class, Roy Williams and his staff are pleased with where they stand. The Tar Heels currently hold a Top 3 recruiting class in the rankings but there is some room to add more and maybe move up.
UNC still has some offers out as they await decisions on Cade Cunningham, Ziaire Williams, Bryce Thompson, Greg Brown and Kerwin Walton. As it stands, the Tar Heels are likely out on Brown but are still in contention for the other four. They certainly wouldn’t turn down a commitment from a player like Cunningham despite rumors swirling that he’s Kentucky bound.
But one of their best bets bight be Williams, a West Coast recruit that has visited UNC a few times over the past year.
The five-star forward is one of the top players in the 2020 recruiting class and would be a huge get for the Tar Heels on the wing. His recruitment has been difficult to gauge of late as predictions have gone back-and-forth from UNC to one of the West Coast teams involved.
While it appears a team like Stanford, Arizona or USC might be the frontrunners right now, UNC is still in it. The tricky thing with the recruitment is when Williams will decide.
That was a topic for Williams when he sat down with 247 Sports lead recruiting analyst Evan Daniels to talk about his recruitment. In the interview, Williams stated that there is no timetable for a decision, meaning it’s likely he decides sometime in 2020:
"Still planning out maybe another official, we’ll see. Just slowly planning it. I don’t have a timetable. I don’t want to have to go out and commit and feel pressured by a certain date. Whenever the date may be I will release it. I’m just taking my time and not stressing out."
Williams also talked about his visit to UNC:
"As far as culture and atmosphere, just the city as a whole, they have everything. The fans are amazing, great support system and of course Roy [Williams]. He’s a Hall of Fame coach, arguably one of the best to ever do it so it’s just fun. Every time I go there it has always been fun."
This could be a recruitment similar to that of Cole Anthony’s a year ago. Anthony eventually committed to UNC in April but the Tar Heels did have to wait a bit for the commitment and rumors swirled with competing program Oregon.
While UNC eventually landed Anthony in the end, this recruitment might be similar but with a different result.
