The UNC Basketball program cracks the Top 10 in the first Associated Press Top 25 poll of the 2019-20 college basketball season

The 2019-20 college basketball season is just two weeks away as the North Carolina Tar Heels will tip off against Notre Dame on November 6th in the Dean Dome to get things started. When the Tar Heels do hit the court for the first time this year, they will do so as a Top 10 team again.

On Monday, the Associated Press released their first Top 25 poll of the season just two weeks out from games actually counting.

While Michigan State took the No. 1 spot followed by No. 2 Kentucky, No. 3 Kansas, No. 4 Duke and No. 5 Louisville, voters still thought highly of UNC. The Tar Heels check in at No. 9 in the first poll of the season, cracking the top 10 for the sixth-straight season.

The last time UNC was ranked outside of the Top 10 was back in 2013-14 when they made their debut at No. 12.

UNC was ranked No. 8 in the preseason poll last year and No. 9 for the 2017-18 season. The last time they were ranked in the Top 5 was back in 2015-16 when they opened the year No. 1 in the country.

The Tar Heels will be tested early this season with a home conference game against the Fighting Irish. With the new Atlantic Coast Conference schedule, UNC will now play 20 conference games a season including one in November and one vs. Virginia in December.

A total of three ACC teams were ranked in the Top 25 with all three in the Top 10. Duke (No. 3) and Louisville (No. 5) are ranked in the Top 5 with the Blue Devils as the preseason ACC favorites.
