Caleb Love makes bold prediction about 5-star UNC basketball target

Despite recent speculation that he may be headed elsewhere, it’s the belief of one recent North Carolina basketball commit that 5-star prospect Ziaire Williams is the most likely of the Tar Heels’ remaining 2020 targets to pick UNC.

Caleb Love, a UNC commit and fellow 5-star prospect, told Rivals that Williams is the player he thinks could end up in Carolina blue by the time his recruitment is complete. When asked who he thought has the biggest chance to attend North Carolina next season — Bryce Thompson, R.J. Davis, Greg Brown, Cade Cunningham or Williams — it was the latter that Love named without hesitation.

Despite the general consensus regarding Williams’ upcoming decision, at least as it pertains to the Tar Heels — analysts and insiders on 247Sports have both Stanford and USC favored over North Carolina — it may be one of the better bets to make at this point in time.

Thompson is looking more and more unlikely to leave the state of Oklahoma, while Texas native and longtime Oklahoma State favorite Cade Cunningham may be leaning toward Kentucky. Davis seems to be a bit of a question mark, while Brown appears to be a near lock for the Longhorns.

Williams, the No. 1 small forward in the class and fifth overall prospect in 2020, named North Carolina to a list of finalists over the summer that includes Arizona, Duke, Oregon, Stanford, USC and UCLA. Most of the talk surrounding his recruitment has been about UNC and Stanford, though the Tar Heels seem to be less of a favorite as time goes on. USC, on the other hand, has picked up a lot of steam in recent months, evidenced by Director of Basketball Scouting Jerry Meyer’s recent Crystal Ball pick in favor of the Trojans.

Earlier this month, Williams did something that no other UNC target had done before when he completed his second official visit to Chapel Hill at Late Night with Roy. Although that visit doesn’t seem to have done much to sway his decision any, North Carolina fans are fairly safe in assuming that current UNC recruit Caleb Love and freshman center Armando Bacot — the program’s top unofficial recruiter — are working on bringing Williams to town next season.
