UNC Football: Tar Heels will enter Week 8 in tie for first place
By Zack Pearson
The UNC Football program finds themselves in a tie for first place in the Coastal Division after seven weeks of the season
For the most part, the turnaround under head coach Mack Brown has been so far, so good in Chapel Hill. In his second stint as the head coach, Brown has the Tar Heels at 3-3 after seven weeks of football and in contention for not only a bowl game but the Atlantic Coast Conference Coastal Division.
The Tar Heels won their first two games vs. South Carolina and Miami before dropping three-straight against Wake Forest, App. State and Clemson. But last Saturday, the Tar Heels got above the .500 mark in conference play with a big road win at Georgia Tech, a place that has given them trouble over the last decade.
With the convincing win over the Yellow Jackets, the Tar Heels are now 2-1 in conference play with the lone blemish coming to powerhouse Clemson. They entered Week 7 just a half game behind Virginia for the lead in the Coastal and now after the Cavaliers loss to Miami, the Tar Heels will be tied for first place going into Week 8.
The Hurricanes were able to take down the Cavaliers on Friday night, tightening things up in the divisional race.
UNC, Virginia, and Duke are all 2-1 in conference play going into the week and the Tar Heels still have games against all three down the stretch. They will host Duke and Virginia but will travel to take on Pitt, as the Panthers are currently 1-1.
The Tar Heels will return from the bye next Saturday taking on Virginia Tech on the road in a Saturday afternoon tilt. The Hokies are currently 1-2 in conference with their only win coming against Miami last week. But the Hokies are still a tough team at home and could shake things up even more in the conference with a win.
With UNC’s resurgence, the months of October and November could be an exciting one for the program and fans for the first time since 2016.
