UNC Basketball: Tar Heels hosting four-star guard this weekend
By Zack Pearson
The UNC Basketball program is hosting a four-star guard in the 2020 recruiting class this weekend, hoping to impress and earn an eventual commitment
Despite having three five-star recruits signed to their 2020 recruiting class, Roy Williams and his staff aren’t done yet. The goal for the North Carolina Tar Heels is to add to what is currently the No. 3 class in the nation behind only Duke and Kentucky.
In UNC’s class are big men Walker Kessler and Day’Ron Sharpe as well as point guard Caleb Love, who committed last week.
The Tar Heels would love to add more to the perimeter as Cole Anthony is expected to be a one-and-done, leaving the Tar Heels with Anthony Harris and Jeremiah Francis as the primary guards in addition to Leaky Black being able to play almost any position on the floor. UNC still has offers out to guards in the 2020 class including five-stars Cade Cunningham and Bryce Thompson as well as four-star R.J. Davis, in hopes of reeling one in.
This weekend, UNC will have their chance to impress one of those recruits as Davis is set to take his official visit to Chapel Hill.
The 5-foot-11, 164-pound combo guard is a dynamic scorer that would be a big boost on the perimeter for the Tar Heels. Davis is versatile and can get a bucket from almost anywhere on the court.
Despite his recruitment being relatively silent, UNC has kept the pressure on. They made Davis’ final four list and visited him in New York earlier this week. This official visit will be the third in his recruitment and a decision should come before the early signing period.
UNC is competing with Marquette, Pitt and Georgetown to land Davis and this weekend could go a long way for their chances.
Ahead of his visit, Rivals’ Corey Evans offered some insight on where the Tar Heels might stand in this recruitment:
"In the meantime, the Tar Heels’ focus will be on R.J. Davis this weekend. The top 65 guard will almost be done with his official visit tour following his trip to North Carolina, and while the Tar Heels may be in catch-up mode, the opposition still has to be concerned about what UNC can offer."
Evans has a point. Even if UNC is playing catchup, their involvement is significant in the recruitment. They are a blue blood program competing against three teams that have done well in the past but aren’t on the level of the Tar Heels.
Davis has already visited Marquette and Pitt but has yet to go to Georgetown for an official.
While Davis is on UNC’s campus this weekend, five-star target Cade Cunningham will be in Lexington to visit Kentucky. Cunningham’s recruitment is a big one for the Tar Heels and there is talk that they are one of the favorites along with Oklahoma State and Kentucky.
UNC is certainly keeping their options open at the guard spot for another recruit in the 2020 class but can they land one?
