Top class of 2020 UNC basketball target names final two teams, eliminates Tar Heels from contention

The North Carolina men’s basketball team is no longer in the running for 5-star class of 2020 prospect Isaiah Todd.

The 6-foot-10, 195-pound power forward out of Raleigh, North Carolina eliminated the Tar Heels from contention on Monday, trimming his list of potential schools down to just two. Along with the Tar Heels, Todd eliminated Kentucky and Memphis, the other two of five finalists that he named in early August.

Todd, who’s ranked No. 12 nationally according to the 247Sports Composite, will be deciding between Kansas and Michigan when he makes his announcement on October 17, his 18th birthday. He broke the news via his personal Twitter account early Monday morning.

Roy Williams and the Tar Heels had been involved with Todd’s recruitment for quite some time, but a recent pledge from 5-star center Walker Kessler — in addition to the commitment of top-20 big man Day’Ron Sharpe — made it difficult to envision a player of Todd’s caliber joining an already jam-packed UNC front court next season.

Kentucky has been thought of as a strong favorite for quite some time, evidenced by the Wildcats’ longstanding stranglehold of Todd’s 247Sports Crystal Ball. Even with three brand new picks for Michigan on Monday morning, Kentucky still leads with 42 percent of votes over the second-place Wolverines, who have now garnered 25 percent.

To this point, the Jayhawks have just one vote, and it dates back to July 2017. It’s a bit difficult to imagine a 5-star prospect committing to Kansas amid so many NCAA allegations against the basketball program, but since he included the Jayhawks among his final two teams, they appear to somehow still be in the running.

North Carolina, on the other hand, is continuing its efforts with 5-star small forward Ziaire Williams and 5-star shooting guard Bryce Thompson, both of which fill a void in next year’s recruiting class.
