The UNC basketball program secures its third 5-star commitment in the class of 2020

The North Carolina basketball program secured its third 5-star commitment from the class of 2020 when top-25 prospect Caleb Love pledged to the Tar Heels on Tuesday night.

A 6-foot-3-inch, 170-pound point guard out of Christian Brothers College in St Louis, Love picked North Carolina over Missouri, the other finalist on his list. He’d already eliminated Arizona, Kansas, Indiana and Louisville from contention last month.

"“I’m headed to North Carolina and the reason I picked them was when I went on my visit, it felt like a family culture, from start to finish, from when I got there to when I left,” Love said. “I just felt like it was home. Honestly when I left the visit I knew that was home. My mom and my dad told me to sleep on it for a couple of days just to make sure and then that’s when I was like, ‘yeah, that’s the place for me.’”"

Love’s importance to the Tar Heels is a tribute to the skill level of incoming freshman point guard Cole Anthony, as well as the likelihood that he leaves North Carolina for the NBA after just one season. If he does enter his name into the draft next June, point guard will be an area of need for the Tar Heels, who are set to start a freshman at the position for the second consecutive season.

Love, an athletic, score-first point guard, will be a terrific replacement for Anthony, who will almost undoubtedly leave North Carolina for the NBA after just one season. Love is a good passer and facilitator, but his propensity for pouring in buckets is the hallmark of his game. His style of play will translate well to a fast-paced, uptempo offense like that of the Tar Heels. His ability to effectively take over the role of point guard on next year’s squad will be paramount to the Tar Heels’ success.

Love is ranked No. 21 in the nation according to the 247Sports Composite for the class of 2020. He’s the fourth-ranked player at his position, and No. 1 in the state of Missouri.
