5-star class of 2020 prospect to visit UNC basketball program on Friday

The North Carolina Tar Heels will host one of their most important targets on Friday when 5-star class of 2020 prospect Caleb Love comes to Chapel Hill.

Love’s importance to the Tar Heels is a tribute to the skill level of incoming freshman point guard Cole Anthony, as well as the likelihood that he leaves North Carolina for the NBA after just one season. If he does enter his name into the draft next June, point guard will be an area of need for the Tar Heels, who are set to start a freshman at the position for the second consecutive season.

Love would be a terrific replacement for Anthony, what with his athletic, score-first mentality, and ability to play either back court position. He’s a good passer and facilitator, but his propensity for pouring in buckets is the hallmark of his game. His style of play would translate well to a fast-paced, uptempo offense like that of the Tar Heels. He could definitely add a few pounds of muscle to his 170-pound frame, but he’s got nice height at 6-feet-3-inches tall.

Last month, Love named a list of six finalists that included Arizona, Indiana, Kansas, Louisville, Missouri and North Carolina. He’s since cancelled his official visit to Indiana, and eliminated the Hoosiers from his list. The general consensus seems to be that Love is favoring North Carolina and Louisville, with Kansas as the dark horse in his recruitment. Recent reports, however, suggest that Love may be strongly considering a commitment to the hometown favorite Missouri Tigers.

The Tar Heels are hoping that a good visit to campus this weekend, along with their apparent need of a replacement for Anthony, will help sway Love to a commitment in their favor. Recruiting analysts and insiders don’t appear to be ready to call it just yet, though, evidenced by his Crystal Ball, which still has zero votes in it, despite being just weeks away from the start of his senior season at Christian Brothers College.

Love is ranked No. 21 in the nation according to the 247Sports Composite for the class of 2020. He’s the fourth-ranked player at his position, and No. 1 in the state of Missouri.
