There will be a small change to the iconic UNC Basketball uniforms beginning with the 2019-20 college basketball season.

When the North Carolina Tar Heels hit the court for the first time in 2019-20 season in a few months, there will be a small change to their uniforms. The Tar Heels are one of the Blue Blood programs with a historic legacy in the game of college basketball and now Nike wants to honor that.

Last week, Nike announced they will be making some changes to college basketball uniforms to pay homage to National Championships programs have won over the years with UNC included.

Andrew Lind of SportsLogos.net reported on the change with Nike inserting a gold tab on the back collar of jerseys for programs that have won it all. Nike will recognize the teams that have won it all while being outfitted by the athletic sportswear company in 1997 when Arizona became the first team to be fully sponsored by Nike. Since then schools sponsored by Nike or Jordan Brand have won 20 national championships.

The Tar Heels have won three National Championships (2005, 2009, 2017) since being sponsored by Nike and Jordan Brand.  Joining the Tar Heels with the new gold tabs will be Duke, Arizona, Florida, UCONN, Virginia, Villanova, Kentucky and Syracuse.

The change is a small one but is also unique way of honoring program’s legacies in the game of college basketball. The NBA does something similar with a gold tab on the back collar for teams that have won it all. Nike took over as the official apparel sponsor of the NBA back in 2015.

Additionally, teams that have reached the Final Four as Nike schools since 1997 will have a silver tab on the back of their jerseys.

Look for this new change when the Tar Heels take the court on “Late Night With Roy” in two weeks as well as when they start the season on Nov. 6.
