UNC Basketball: Why Tar Heels could play factor with N.C. State target
By Zack Pearson
Could the UNC Basketball program be interested in a top N.C. State target that just reclassified to 2020? It’s possible and it could shake things up
With the North Carolina Tar Heels having a need on the perimeter in future classes, they have several offers out to recruits that could help.
But a new recruit in the 2020 class doesn’t have an offer from UNC just yet and if the Tar Heels do decide to offer, it could change his recruitment.
Four-star point guard Cam Hayes recently made the decision to reclassify from the 2021 recruiting class to 2020. His decision puts him among the top 50 ranked players on 247 Sports and should see him draw some interest from new programs.
The Greensboro native is the No. 5 ranked point guard in 2020 and as it stands now, appears to be favoring N.C. State. Kevin Keatts and the Wolfpack have built a great relationship with Hayes and he appears to be the Wolfpack’s to lose.
However, one recruiting analyst thinks that an offer from UNC might change things for his recruitment if it happens. In his Wednesday Leftovers column on Rivals, recruiting analyst Corey Evans was asked about N.C. State’s recruiting forecast and talked about Hayes. Here is what he said, which included UNC:
"One prospect that did visit was Cam Hayes. He just reclassified into the 2020 class, and as long as North Carolina doesn’t offer Keatts should have a strong chance with him."
The Tar Heels have shown some interest in Hayes but have yet to offer the point guard. He does have 10 offers and did visit the Wolfpack but with his reclassification to 2020 he might draw some more interest from other programs.
As of now, nothing indicates that the Tar Heels are close to offering but with a need on the wing and them likely missing out on some targets, Hayes could be an interesting offer.
