Three UNC Football players were named ACC Players of the Week for their performances against the Gamecocks in Week 1

One of the more shocking wins in the first week of the college football season came when the North Carolina Tar Heels defeated the South Carolina Gamecocks on Saturday afternoon in Charlotte.

UNC was able to rally from 11 down in the second half to upset the Gamecocks, earning their first win in the second stint of the Mack Brown era. While it was frustrating early on, UNC opened up the playbook a little more in the second half backed by an impressive performance by freshman Sam Howell.

The former four-star recruit led two 95-plus yard touchdown drives in the second half to help UNC gain the lead. For his efforts, Howell was one of three Tar Heels named Atlantic Coast Conference Players of the Week.

Howell was named the ACC Freshman of the Week announced by the conference on Tuesday afternoon for his performance on Saturday, finishing with 245 passing yards, 2 touchdowns and a completion percentage of 62.5. He settled down more in the second half and made some impressive throws, helping UNC get the win.

Joining Howell on that list are Myles Wolfolk (Defensive Back of the Week) and Charlie Heck (Offensive Lineman of the Week).

Wolfolk had two interceptions, both late in the fourth quarter to help seal the win for UNC as he brought out the new “Turnover Belt” for the first time this season. His second interception came on the second to last drive with South Carolina march deep into UNC territory.

The senior Heck played the entire game, allowing no sacks and having six knockdowns per the ACC. He also didn’t miss an assignment according to the press release.

UNC will return to action on Saturday night for their home opener against Miami at Kenan Memorial Stadium. They will open up as 6-point underdogs to a Hurricanes team that lost to No. 8 Florida two weeks ago.
