The UNC Football program has one recruit in their 2021 class verbally committed but some targets have moved up in the updated rankings

So far in Mack Brown’s second stint as head coach at the University of North Carolina, he’s put an emphasis on landing in-state talent for his recruiting classes.

While Brown was only on the job for a few months, his 2019 class was still impressive and included the flip of four-star quarterback Sam Howell who is projected to be the starter when UNC opens up the season vs. South Carolina. Brown was able to land a class that finished ranked 29th nationally per 247 Sports.

Brown’s 2020 class has hovered around the Top 10 for some time and is currently 18th as we get ready to close out the month of August. That 2020 class includes 12 players from the state of North Carolina, something former head coach Larry Fedora struggled with in terms of recruiting.

UNC does have just one commitment in 2021 with in-state safety Dontavius Nash offering his verbal back in June. Nash is a four-star recruit that is ranked No. 14 in the state but a Top 250 player in the country.

Earlier this week, Rivals released their Rivals250 rankings for the 2021 class with Nash debuting at No. 214 overall. The 6-foot-1, 170-pound safety continues to see his stock rise and could climb the rankings even more before National Signing Day in 2021.

But even with just one recruit committed, Brown and his staff have offers out to some of the top players in the state of North Carolina. Here are the recruits that made the cut for the Rivals250 from the state and have an offer from UNC:

  • No. 19 DT Payton Page (Greensboro) ★★★★★
  • No. 53 RB Will Shipley (Matthews) ★★★★
  • No. 63 RB Evan Pryor (Cornelius) ★★★★
  • No. 72 WR Gavin Blackwell (Monroe) ★★★★
  • No. 111 DE Jahvaree Ritzie (Kernersville) ★★★★
  • No. 148 QB Drake Maye (Charlotte) ★★★★ (COMMITTED TO ALABAMA)

Brown and his staff will certainly add to their 2021 class and they are off to a great start with Nash already committed. We imagine UNC would pull in at least a few more in-state recruits with both Page and Shipley being the two biggest targets.
