5-star UNC basketball target continues to work through recruiting process, prepares to trim list of schools

Roy Williams and the North Carolina Tar Heels are in hot pursuit of Bryce Thompson, a 5-star prospect from the 2020 class that says he’s preparing to cut down his list of schools. The news should bring neither suspense nor concern to Williams and company, as North Carolina will almost undoubtedly make it on to Thompson’s list of finalists.

In a recent interview with KJRH sports anchor Jacob Tobey, Thompson confirmed that he plans to trim his list in the next couple of days. The 6-foot-5, 175-pound Thompson noted that he and his family would sit down and discuss the options before announcing the condensed list. He’ll then plan more official visits based on the remaining programs in his recruitment.

A senior at Booker T. Washington High School in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Thompson’s got scholarship offers from Arkansas, Houston, Kansas, Michigan State, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Tennessee, Texas and Texas A&M, among others. The Sooners, Cowboys, Jayhawks, Tar Heels and Spartans are among the teams considered to be favorites for Thompson, and it would be fairly surprising if most, if not all, of the quintet didn’t make it to his list of finalists.

Equipped with good size and length for his position, Thompson is a good ball handler with a terrific offensive game that allows him to score from all over the court. He can run the break, create his own shot in the half court and knock down jumpers from behind the three-point line with consistency.

He’s also a good passer, gets his teammates involved in the offense and plays tenacious defense on the opposite end of the court. His wiry frame and basketball savvy will help him guard multiple positions at the collegiate level. And given the improvement he’s made over the past season, he’s not even close to reaching his full potential.

Thompson is the No. 20 prospect in the nation according to the 247Sports Composite. He’s the fourth-ranked combo guard in the class, and the No. 1 player from the state of Oklahoma.
