Jalen Green

Jalen Green is one of the best high school basketball players in the nation, but North Carolina fans need not apply. At least, that’s the way it’s looking with the elite class of 2020 prospect.

Despite the Tar Heels’ contact with Green over the summer, and continued interest in him, it appears as if North Carolina will be left on the outside looking in. With so much ground to make up, and a decision date set for December 25, it seems highly unlikely that the Tar Heels will have what it takes to pull off the come-from-behind win for Green’s commitment.

Green has already racked up nearly 20 scholarship offers, and has programs like Kansas, Kentucky, Florida State and UCLA hot on his trail. It’s the Memphis Tigers, though, that may have a leg up on Green, as head coach Penny Hardaway looks to make him the headliner in his next wave of talented freshmen.

That’s not to say that Roy Williams and the Tar Heels aren’t going to continue pursuing Green, the No. 3 prospect in the class. Recent reports even indicate that North Carolina might get an official visit from the player ranked second among combo guards, and second in the state of California. For now, though, it’s Memphis that appears to have the lead in Green’s recruitment.

There has also been a growing chatter in recent weeks regarding Green’s potential decision to skip college, and prepare for the NBA with a professional team overseas. Whether he chooses that route or not is yet to be seen, but it’s obviously an option for him.

His Crystal Ball is currently favoring Memphis with 67 percent of votes, including that of 247Sports Director of Basketball Scouting Jerry Meyer, though his prediction came all the way back in December.
