UNC Football: Bulldogs, Tar Heels hoping to set up home-and-home series
By Zack Pearson
A future series between the UNC Football program and Georgia could be in the works but fans will have to wait a long time
The North Carolina Tar Heels are set to open up the 2019 college football season against an SEC opponent as they will take on South Carolina in Charlotte on August 31st, marking the third time in the past five years they will face an SEC opponent in Week 1.
And now there could be plans for more.
According to Online Athens, the University of Georgia and North Carolina are attempting to schedule a future home-and-home series for the football programs. The report states that Georgia contacted UNC earlier this season to set up the series but they have yet to reach an agreement:
"Georgia approached North Carolina earlier this year about setting up a home-and-home football series, but the power five conference programs have yet to reach an agreement."
The two Power Five schools will likely get something done for future schedules but we might be waiting a long time. Online Athens reveals that Georgia proposed games for 2027 in Athens and 2030 in Chapel Hill but there could be a snag.
Georgia is looking to schedule up to three Power Five conference opponents a season but already has those games filled in 2028 and 2029. They will play at Florida State in 2027 and then host Clemson in 2030.
With Atlantic Coast Conference opponents already scheduled in those years, it’s unlikely UNC would be added until after 2030.
The Tar Heels don’t have a Power Five school scheduled in 2027 but will play at TCU in 2026 in a home-and-home series. They will also host Notre Dame in 2026 and play in South Bend during the 2030 season as part of the ACC rotation the Fighting Irish have. With open dates on the future schedule, it appears as if it will be Georgia holding this up until they can find a year.
Both proposed games by Georgia would have been Week 1 games and UNC has not had the best of luck over time opening up against Power Five conferences. The Tar Heels have lost nine-straight season openers against Power Five conferences with their last win coming in 1997 when they beat Indiana.
