Former UNC Basketball standout Vince Carter will return to the Atlanta Hawks for another season in the NBA, marking the 22nd of his career

The ageless Vince Carter is officially back for one more season.

Rumors started swirling on Monday morning that Carter would return to the Atlanta Hawks as the two sides reportedly had a deal in place. It didn’t take long for those rumors to come true.

On Monday night, ESPN NBA reporter Adrian Wojnarowski broke the news that Carter was returning for another season with the Atlanta Hawks. The upcoming season will be the 22nd for Carter as he passes Kevin Garnett, Robert Parrish, Dirk Nowitzki, and Kevin Willis for the most seasons played in NBA history.

The former UNC standout spent all of last season with Atlanta, averaging 7.4 points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.1 assists in 17.5 minutes per game. Carter shot 41.9 percent from the field including 38.9 percent from the three-point line.

As a veteran, Carter is the perfect fit for a Hawks team that is rebuilding and has some young talent to do it around. After drafting Trae Young a year ago, Atlanta selected De’Andre Hunter (No. 4 overall), Cam Reddish (No. 10 overall) and Bruno Fernando (No. 34 overall). There is a lot of young talent on the roster and having a player like Carter there could be big for the rebuild.

If Carter does play a game in 2020, he will also become the first player in NBA history to play in four decades. He was drafted with the fifth overall pick in the 1998 NBA Draft and was part of a draft day trade that sent him from Golden State to Toronto in exchange for cousin and former UNC teammate Antawn Jamison.

The 42-year-old Carter not only has one year left in the league, but he has a future in broadcasting for the NBA as well. He’s spent time recently as a guest analyst for Summer League Games and Wojnarowski thinks there will be a big market for him as an analyst following next season.
