The UNC Basketball program has been after a four-star target out of the Midwest and earlier this week he updated his recruitment

Roy Williams is hoping that he can go into the Midwest and land a big recruiting target for his 2020 recruiting class in 6-foot-11 center Dawson Garcia.

The Minnesota native has been on North Carolina’s radar for a few months now and shortly after Williams traveled up North to see him play in the Minnesota Basketball Coaches Association Showcase, he officially extended an offer. Garcia received his offer from UNC on June 24th, becoming the third player in the 2020 class to receive an offer from the Tar Heels on that day.

Since then, Garcia’s recruitment has been quiet as he suffered an illness that kept him off the court and unable to play for his AAU team D1 Minnesota for two tournaments. Garcia will return to the court this week for the Fantastic 40 in Las Vegas but before that happens, the Star Tribune caught up with the prospect to discuss his recruitment.

Garcia talked to Marcus Fuller of the Star Tribune about his illness and return to the court but he also discussed his recruitment.

Per Fuller, Garcia is planning on trimming his list making a big update to his recruitment as we enter the month of August:

"It’s a little bit difficult. It would’ve been a lot easier if I was able to play in Birmingham or go to Team USA (junior national team minicamp last week), because I would’ve cut my list a lot sooner. But it’s really that I’m going to sit down with my family and coach to just talk about all the schools. Probably come up with a top seven or eight. Not right after Vegas, but I’m going to talk it out soon about (official) visits here and there. And I’m still keeping other schools in mind as well."

The Tar Heels are one of 22 teams to offer the prospect out of the Midwest and so far, he’s taken three visits. Garcia has visited Baylor, Marquette and Texas in the past year but he plans on taking more official visits.

If UNC does make his list, it will be interesting to see if he takes an official visit. With the Tar Heels showing interest, they could have a shot to pluck him out of the Midwest and pair him with five-star commit Day’Ron Sharpe.

UNC has already seen a few targets cut their list with the Tar Heels being included so hopefully that trend continues.
