UNC Football standout Michael Carter earned some preseason recognition as he was named to the Doak Walker Award Watch List

The North Carolina Tar Heels’ football program has struggled over the past two seasons, winning just five total games over that span. The struggles led to the firing of Larry Fedora and Mack Brown being named the replacement.

After UNC lost a lot of talent from that 2016 team, they had to replenish through recruiting classes and despite the lack of success the previous two years, the roster has talent. Arguably one of the most talented players comes at a position where UNC is pretty deep.

Running back Michael Carter is entering his third year with the Tar Heels and so far through his first two seasons, he has flashed his potential to be one of the top running backs in the Atlantic Coast Conference and potentially the nation.

Carter will lead this running back group into 2019 in hopes of helping turn this program around, starting with the offense.

On Wednesday, Carter earned some preseason recognition as he was one of the players named to the Doak Walker Award Watch List. The award is handed out by the PwC SMU Athletic Forum to the nation’s top college running back each year.

Carter was one of 71 players named to the preseason award watch list and he was also a candidate back in 2018. You can see the full list for 2019 here.

The running back burst onto the scene in his freshman season with the Tar Heels back in 2017 rushing for 94 yards on 8 carries and 2 touchdowns in the Week 1 loss to Cal. He finished the season with 559 rushing yards on 97 attempts and 8 touchdowns.

In 2018 Carter finished with 597 yards on 84 attempts and 2 touchdowns while playing in 9 games. He missed the first three games of the season with an injury. Carter also had 25 receptions for 135 yards and a touchdown.

He earned ACC Running Back of the Week honors for his performance vs. Virginia Tech in 2018, rushing for 165 yards on 18 carries.

Next. Tar Heels to open camp in early August. dark
