UNC basketball target stands out at Under Armor Association finals during July evaluation period
College basketball coaches had just one opportunity this month to scout the high school players on their recruiting boards, and that came during the July evaluation period last week.
One of the top players at the Under Armor Association finals over the weekend was Bryce Thompson, a 6-foot-5, 175-pound prospect from the class of 2020. Ranked 20th in the class, the 5-star prospect is one of the fastest rising amateur players in the nation, recently jumping up 36 spots from his previous position in the 247Sports Composite.
Arkansas, Houston, Kansas, Michigan State, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas and Texas A&M are all in the mix for a Thompson commitment, and it appears that his recruitment is still wide open.
Thompson has good size and length for his position. He’s a good ball handler with a terrific offensive game that allows him to score from all over the court. He can run the break, create his own shot and knock down jumpers from beyond the arc.
He’s a good passer that likes to get teammates involved in the offense, and plays tenacious defense on the opposite end of the court. His wiry frame and basketball I.Q. should help him guard multiple positions at the collegiate level. And given his current trajectory, he may still be a ways away from reaching his ceiling.
The team over at 247Sports was on hand to watch Thompson play at the UA finals, and had this to say of the talented wing’s game:
"“One of the best scorers in the country, Thompson had it working in a big way on Saturday evening,” writes Evan Daniels. “At one point Thompson hit four threes in a row, completely taking over the game and giving his team separation. Beyond being a good shooter and scorer, Thompson is also more than willing to get others involved, and made several nice passes as well. Also, being a good athlete with length, Thompson can get into the lane and finish, and then is a capable defender as well.”"
Thompson is looking to finish out his travel season before eliminating some of the teams on his radar. Once he has compiled a list of finalists, he’ll look to take official visits before making a decision that could happen as early as this fall.
