The lone UNC Basketball commit in their 2020 recruiting class was called a standout on Day 1 of an AAU event in Alabama

With the Summer evaluation period opening up this week, college coaches have the opportunity to get out there and watch prospects for the next few days.

On Thursday we told you about a few recruits that North Carolina head coach Roy Williams watched at the Nike EYBL Peach Jam including rising point guard R.J. Davis as well as a pair of Top 10 recruits. But the Peach Jam isn’t the only event going on or the only one that UNC has been spotted at.

The Adidas Gauntlet event tipped off earlier this week as well in Birmingham, Alabama and will continue through the weekend. It may not get the attention like the Peach Jam does but it’s still a big event for those on the Adidas circuit, including UNC’s lone 2020 commit Day’Ron Sharpe.

The five-star center playing for Garner Road out of North Carolina looked impressive on the first day of the event against the Atlanta Celtics. Sharpe scored 14 points and grabbed 9 rebounds while playing 27 minutes in a loss.

His play earned him the recognition of being an early standout at the event by 247 Sports recruiting analysts Evan Daniels, Brian Snow and Josh Gershon. The trio listed seven players between the Peach Jam and Adidas Gauntlet event from Thursday’s session, with Sharpe making the cut. Here is what they said about the future Tar Heel:

"Sharpe is one of the best prospects in the country and he showed it on Thursday. A skilled big man with size and a high motor, Sharpe was dominant at times, despite his team falling to the Atlanta Celtics. At around 6-foot-10, Sharpe has elite hands, is a tremendous rebounder, and is getting better with his touch around the rim. Also while not being a great leaper, he shows good timing on blocking shots, and can really pass out of the post. As he gets stronger and continues to get into better shape, he will be an absolute load to handle, and he seems to get better every single time he steps on the court."

The center has really elevated his game since committing to UNC back in June of 2018, reaching five-star status just a few weeks back.

While playing on the AAU circuit, Sharpe has stood out and taken the advantage to perform well in front of coaches and analysts.

At this rate, Sharpe could find himself climbing the recruiting rankings even more and possibly landing in the Top 15 by the time he arrives at UNC. With Sharpe committed, UNC is off to a great start in the 2020 class and can build around the North Carolina native.
