UNC Basketball: Will 2020 be a ‘super class’ for Tar Heels?
By Zack Pearson
Could the 2020 recruiting class for the UNC Basketball program be a break through as a super class? One analyst believes it’s possible
Roy Williams and his staff at North Carolina have done a great job over the years with the talent that they have had in Chapel Hill. UNC has had their fair-share of Top 10 recruiting classes since Williams arrived on campus in 2003 but have only had a No. 1 class just once, with that coming in 2006.
They have had a few Top 5 classes as well and one No. 2 overall class. With the one-and-done taking over college basketball, Williams and the Tar Heels have been able to keep up despite not landing the talent that schools like Kentucky or Duke have. UNC even has a national championship and two Final Four appearances in the “one-and-done” era.
But this recruiting cycle could be one that is a “break through” for the Tar Heels, at least according to one recruiting analyst.
UNC has five-star center Day’Ron Sharpe verbally committed, giving them the No. 13 recruiting class per 247 Sports early in the cycle. With an entire Summer AAU session plus the high school season to go, this class is far from being completed.
The Tar Heels have several offers out to top prospects with five-star wings Ziaire Williams and Jaden Springer at the top of their list. They also have offers out for post players, in hopes of adding alongside Sharpe.
If everything falls into place, it could be a monster 2020 recruiting class for the Tar Heels.
That was one of the discussion topics in Rivals’ reporter Eric Bossi’s three-point play article released earlier in the week. Bossi discussed the state of recruiting for three programs, including UNC. Here is what Bossi said on the potential for UNC’s recruiting class:
"The 2020 class, though, could be the one that UNC breaks through with a super class like those folks in Durham and Lexington are accustomed to. Five-star big man Day’Ron Sharpeis already locked up and the Heels are considered to be serious players for five-stars Ziaire Williams, Bryce Thompson, Jaden Springer and Isaiah Todd. Add in others on the cusp of five-star status like Caleb Love, Cam’Ron Fletcher, Earl Timberlake and more and it appears that this could be the year for a monster class in Chapel Hill."
The dream scenario for UNC is to two of the three recruits in Williams, Springer and Bryce Thompson on the wing plus a post player such as Greg Brown, Hunter Dickinson or Walker Kessler.
There is also the potential to land a point guard like Caleb Love, which would be the icing on the cake and improve UNC’s backcourt which has a need at the position going into 2020.
A lot can and will happen over the next few months but let’s hope the dominoes fall into place for the Tar Heels.
