Five former Tar Heels were a part of the United States Women’s National Soccer Team that captured their fourth World Cup title on Sunday

The United States Women’s Soccer Team has officially become the second team in history to win back-to-back World Cup titles after a 2-0 win in Sunday’s final against the Netherlands. It was a dominant performance again by the USWNT throughout the entire World Cup in France, capturing their fourth title when it was all said and done.

Things started off a little slow in Sunday’s match as the US had chances to score early in the first half but were denied by keeper Sari van Veenendaal. The keeper turned away four shots in that first half, keeping the Dutch in it.

After being tied at half for the first time in this tournament, USA opened up the scoring in the second half when Megan Rapinoe found the back of the net on a penalty shot. The 1-0 lead proved to be enough for USA but they added the finisher on a beauty by Rose LaVelle in the 69th minute.

The US was able to hold off an runs the Dutch made in the second half, playing solid defense led by former UNC standout Crystal Dunn.  The 27-year-old played fantastic in the last line of defense for the US and was able to push the ball up to help create some pressure.

Dunn was one of five former Tar Heels to win the World Cup title this year joining fellow starter Tobin Heath as well as reserves Allie Long, Ashlyn Harris, Jessica McDonald:

For Harris and Heath, this is their second World Cup title as they won it all in 2015 with the U.S. squad. Per Bryan Ives, there have been 23 different Tar Heels to win a Women’s World Cup title with just five winning multiple titles.
