UNC Basketball: Tar Heels have 2021 point guard on their radar
By Zack Pearson
The UNC Basketball program has a new target on their 2021 recruiting board as they have watched a point guard from Indiana
Roy Williams and his staff have been busy over the past few weeks with recruiting and it’s only going to continue to pick up as the Summer days go on. With the Nike EYBL Peach Jam as well as other AAU events going on, the month of July will be huge in the recruiting world.
The Tar Heels currently have a Top 15 recruiting class in 2020 with five-star center Day’Ron Sharpe verbally committed but Williams is expected to add to his class and it has the potential to be something special.
While the main focus is on the 2020 class, there is still some news coming out about 2021 targets for this Summer. One of those new targets on North Carolina’s recruiting board is 2021 point guard Khristian Lander. The Indiana native is a five-star prospect that is ranked No. 17 overall and the No. 1 point guard in the 2021 class by 247 Sports.
As it stands now, Lander has a total of 9 offers headlined by Indiana, Illinois, Missouri and Louisville among others. The Tar Heels have yet to offer Lander but that could change very soon.
The Tar Heels were one of the teams that watched Lander at the Charlie Hughes Classic last week per Trevor Andershock:
Lander has really started to elevate his play during the AAU circuits and teams are starting to notice. He was named a standout at the Nike Elite 100 camp last week and following that, he earned an offer from the Florida Gators.
As for what he’s looking for in his recruitment, Lander’s father told Indiana Sports Beat that his son is a player that will be ready to play right away. Finding a team that will have a spot for the point guard to come in a play could be a big factor on what team he decides on.
The Tar Heels currently do not have a point guard committed for 2020 or 2021 and five-star guard Cole Anthony will be a one-and-done after this season. They do have combo guard Anthony Harris but he can play shooting guard if needed. That should open up a spot for a point guard like Lander to come in and start for the 2021-22 season.
UNC is expected to be in on the recruitment of Lander moving forward and it’s something to pay attention too in the coming months. The competition is tough and pulling Lander out of the Midwest from in-state Indiana or other teams close by might be difficult.
