UNC Basketball alumni: Coby White makes Summer League debut
By Zack Pearson
Former UNC Basketball point guard Coby White made his Summer League debut with the Chicago Bulls on Friday night in a win over the Lakers.
Just a few weeks after he heard his name called early in the 2019 NBA Draft, former North Carolina standout Coby White made his NBA Summer League debut.
On Friday night White started at point guard for the Chicago Bulls in their Summer League opener vs. the Los Angeles Lakers in Las Vegas, becoming one of the first Tar Heels to play in the Vegas session this Summer. White was selected with the No. 7 overall pick by the Bulls in late June in hopes of becoming the future at the point guard position.
For a team that is rebuilding, they need to hit on some draft picks including the point guard position. While it’s only Summer League, it didn’t take White long to make an impact with his new team and fellow rookie teammate.
White connected with fellow draft pick Daniel Gafford on a alley-oop dunk for his first assist in the Summer League. Then a possession later, White drained a 19-foot jump shot to get into the scoring column.

While White started off strong, he did struggle to shoot from the floor. He finished the game with 17 points and 3 assists in the Bulls 96-76 win over the Lakers but was just 6 of 18 from the field including 0 for 7 from the three-point line. The point guard did connect on a few mid-range jumpers, showing off that part of his game but really did struggle from the outside.
It was White’s first game in the Summer League and this really isn’t a good measuring stick especially early on. However, White did show some flashes in transition by pushing the ball up the court and finding teammates in the Bulls’ offense.
White and the Bulls will be back in action on Sunday night in Vegas as they take on the Cleveland Cavaliers. The game will be aired on ESPN and will tip off at 7:30 p.m. ET.
