UNC Basketball: Analyst hints at bright future for Tar Heels’ recruiting
By Zack Pearson
The UNC Basketball program could reel in a big 2020 recruiting class as it is already off to a great start with a verbal from Day’Ron Sharpe
The 2020 recruiting class for the North Carolina Tar Heels could be one of the most important for Roy Williams in his tenure with the program. After turning in an impressive 2019 recruiting class, the Tar Heels are set to make a few runs at another national championship over the next few years.
While Cole Anthony will be a one-and-done player, that 2019 recruiting class also has center Armando Bacot, and guards Anthony Harris and Jeremiah Francis. Add in returning players with experience like Garrison Brooks, Sterling Manley and Rechon “Leaky” Black, the Tar Heels should have a very balanced roster.
It’s easy to get too far ahead of ourselves, after all there is a 2019-20 season still to be played beginning this November. But the thought of UNC mixing this roster with a great 2020 class is intriguing.
The 2020 class is off to a great start early in the recruiting cycle, picking up a verbal commitment from five-star center Day’Ron Sharpe. UNC currently has the No. 12 ranked class in the country per 247 Sports and No. 3 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
With Sharpe committed, the Tar Heels do have offers out to several other recruits in the class ranging from four-to-five star players. Five-star forward Ziaire Williams appears to be the most likely to commit to UNC out of all of the recruits left and pairing him with Sharpe would be ideal for Williams and his staff.
Rivals recruiting analyst Corey Evans believes this could be the start of a tremendous run for UNC’s class as he detailed in his Twitter Tuesday article earlier this week. Here is what Evans wrote:
"I don’t think that North Carolina cashes in to that extent in 2020 class, but the Tar Heels sure are on the verge of a tremendous recruiting run and could realistically secure three five-star commitments during this recruiting cycle. The Tar Heels are going to strike on the wings. Ziaire Williams is the likeliest, but they are not too far off with Greg Brown, either. Isaiah Todd, Dawson Garcia, and Earl Timberlak eare three other North Carolina targets, as is Puff Johnson, the younger brother of Cam Johnson."
Evans also goes on to say that he thinks UNC lands one of these three recruits: Caleb Love, Jaden Springer or Bryce Thompson.
If all of this happens, the 2020 class could end up being ranked No. 1 overall and would be one of the best under Roy for the program. It also gives them a legit shot at winning it all, again.
