UNC Basketball: Roy Williams in attendance for this top-50 prospect
UNC basketball coach Roy Williams was in attendance to watch this top-50 prospect from the class of 2020
Roy Williams and the North Carolina Tar Heels continue to be a strong presence on the recruiting trail this offseason, offering or tracking nearly half of the players ranked within the top-50 of the 247Sports Composite.
The most recent player linked to North Carolina is Lance Ware, a 6-foot-9, 215-pound prospect out of Camden High School in Burlington, New Jersey. Williams and a number of other coaches — Jay Wright and Jim Larranaga to name a couple — were on hand in Philadelphia to watch Ware play at the Philly 2 Live event.
The talented big man has put together a nice spring and summer, showing the kind of skill and improved consistency that is making him a priority for several big name basketball programs including Maryland, Miami, Ohio State and Virginia Tech. Each of the aforementioned has already offered the 4-star forward a scholarship, and North Carolina could be next. Fellow ACC powerhouse Louisville is involved, too, and an offer from Chris Mack and the Cardinals could be on its way soon.
Rivals recruiting analyst Corey Evans was in Philadelphia to catch the action, and had the following to say about Ware’s recruitment:
"“Ware is expected to trim his list soon,” Evans said. “The four-star forward has become much more consistent with his game and numbers which has made him a top target for some of the top programs along the East Coast. Head coaches from DePaul, Miami, North Carolina and Villanova came out to see Ware this week, with a number of other high-major assistants spotted at his games in Philadelphia. The lefty has become a Tar Heel target and while an offer has not been extended just yet, it would not be a surprise if he lands one next month.”"
Ware’s recruitment is just beginning to heat up, and a timeline for his decision is unknown at this point. There’s also no real feeling for where he could end up committing to, as evidenced by the fact that no predictions regarding his recruitment have been made on Rivals or 247Sports.
Ware is the No. 47 prospect in the class of 2020 according to the 247Sports Composite. He’s the No. 8 power forward in the class, and second in the state of New Jersey.
