UNC Basketball Alumni: Harrison Barnes to stay in Sacramento?
By Zack Pearson
Harrison Barnes made a risky move to decline his player option and test free agency but the former UNC Basketball player appears to be headed back to Sacramento
Former University of North Carolina standout Harrison Barnes made headlines a few weeks ago when he declined his $25.1M player option this offseason. Instead, Barnes made the gamble to test free agency and potentially look for a new home.
But on Friday, just two days before the start of the 2019 NBA Free Agency period, it appears as if he will stay in Sacramento on a new deal.
Sacramento radio host Carmichael Dave of 1140 The Drive is reporting that the Kings plan on signing to a four-year deal worth in the area of $88M. The report has also been confirmed by NBA beat reporter Marc Stein as well.
Stein mentions in his tweet that Barnes could get $90M which is similar to what Dave reported as well. Barnes may be taking less money by turning down that $25.1M player option but he has some long term stability with that four-year deal in Sacramento.
The contract is expected to be offered as soon as free agency opens up on Sunday night.
After being drafted as a lottery pick by the Golden State Warriors in 2012 but then left in free agency after just four seasons. In 2016, Barnes signed a four-year deal worth $94M with the Dallas Mavericks before being traded in a deal that included former UNC standout Justin Jackson this past season.
Barnes played in 28 games for the Kings, averaging 14.3 points and 5.5 rebounds per game for a team that is still rebuilding.
