UNC Athletics: New bill allows North Carolina schools to sell alcohol during events
By Zack Pearson
A new bill signed into a law will allow North Carolina colleges to sell alcohol at sporting events beginning this year
Some big changes are coming to sporting events on the campus of the University of North Carolina this year.
On Wednesday, Gov. Roy Cooper signed a bill into law that allows public universities to sell legal beer and wine during sporting events on campus for the first time ever. That means when you attend UNC Football games, basketball games and baseball games, you will be able to buy beer and wine.
The law comes into play just a few months before the college football season starts and the Tar Heels host gams at Kenan Memorial Stadium.
UNC Athletic Director Bubba Cunningham says the school is in favor of selling alcohol during games so you won’t have to worry about being left out. Here is what Cunningham said in a statement via the News & Observer:
"“Since the bill was introduced, we have been having conversations and exploring opportunities related to selling alcohol in our stadiums,” Cunningham said in the statement. “Our Trustees support this effort, and now that the bill has been signed, our game management staff and concession partner will soon make a presentation to me about the different scenarios involved in such sales, and I will consult with University leadership about the best path forward.”"
It won’t only be UNC affected by this new law. Other Division I schools in North Carolina will have their boards vote on it. That includes Appalachian State, Charlotte, East Carolina ,N.C. State, N.C. Central, N.C. A&T, UNC Asheville, UNC Greensboro, UNC Wilmington and Western Carolina.
If both UNC and N.C. State do decide to sell beer and wine at games, they will join Louisville and Syracuse as the only schools in the Atlantic Coast Conference to do so. Duke is a private institution and is unaffected by the passing of this bill. Duke, UNC and N.C. State all do serve some alcohol at campus sporting events but it’s in areas for the high-end donors.
The new bill will also help bring in extra revenue for the Universities’ athletic programs.
