The UNC Basketball program’s lone 2020 commit has surged in the recruiting rankings, moving up in Rivals’ updated list on Tuesday afternoon

As the North Carolina Tar Heels await the final decision in their 2019 recruiting class with Jalen Wilson announcing on Wednesday, the focus shifts to the 2020 recruiting class for Roy Williams and his staff.

The Tar Heels currently have one player verbally committed to their 2020 class as center Day’Ron Sharpe offered that verbal in June of 2018. Sharpe was a fringe Top 50 player and a four-star recruit when he verbally committed but was improving on the court.

Over the span of a year, Sharpe has really upped his game while playing for South Central High School as well as performing on the AAU circuit. On Tuesday, Sharpe was rewarded for his improved play as Rivals released their updated list of prospects for the 2020 class.

Sharpe was one of the big risers on that list moving up 10 spots from No. 27 to No. 17 on the 2020 list and is now a five-star recruit. He was ranked as a four-star recruit until this recent update.

With Sharpe’s move in the rankings, UNC as a team has climbed into the Top 5 for team rankings and is the top-rated Atlantic Coast Conference team.

There is still a lot of time left between now and when this recruiting cycle wraps up and the Tar Heels are still after a lot of top prospects. Two of the biggest names are Cade Cunningham and Ziaire Williams who both seem to be high on UNC’s list. The Tar Heels were recently called a contender for Cunningham and Williams was listed as the “must-get” recruit for Williams and his staff.

As for Sharpe, there is also plenty of time for him to keep improving his game. If he stays on this pace, he could find himself as a Top 10 player and the next dominant post player for the Tar Heels.
