Is class of 2020 UNC basketball pledge Day’Ron Sharpe a 4-star prospect? Not so fast, says this recruiting outlet.

The North Carolina Tar Heels got off to a fast start in the class of 2020 with an early commitment from 6-foot-10, 246-pound Day’Ron Sharpe. And despite the lack of media coverage or fanfare surrounding him and the Tar Heels at the time of his commitment, Roy Williams and company appear to have gotten a good one in Sharpe.

And if his recent rise in recruiting ranking is any indication at all, that may be a tremendous understatement.

The former 4-star prospect out of South Central High School in Winterville, North Carolina, who was most recently ranked 31st by 247Sports, is up double-digit spots to No. 18 in the latest Top247. He’s currently 26th in the nation according to the 247Sports Composite, though he’ll likely surpass that ranking by the time he steps foot onto the UNC campus next summer.

It’s quite a jump up for a player who was seen by many as a middling, underwhelming addition to the Tar Heels’ 2020 class at the time of his commitment last summer; at least for those outside of Chapel Hill, like Rivals.com, who had Sharpe ranked 90th overall this time last year.

Evan Daniels, Director of Basketball Scouting for 247Sports, had this to say about Sharpe’s ascent to a 5-star ranking, and top-20 position among next year’s recruiting class:

"“North Carolina commit Day’Ron Sharpe is the highest-ranked five-star newcomer at No. 18. Sharpe had an impressive junior season and that carried over into his spring, where he had dominant moments.”"

The talented big man has already grown an inch and put on better than 20 pounds since last season, and could be even bigger by the time he suits up for the Tar Heels next fall. And don’t be surprised if his climb up recruiting boards isn’t done, either.
