The UNC baseball team throttles Boston College, advances to ACC Championship game

After consecutive games against Virginia and Miami that went into extra innings, the North Carolina Tar Heels hung 13 runs on Boston College in just eight frames, advancing to the 2019 ACC Championship game.

North Carolina didn’t wait long to get on the board, scoring two runs in the first inning after opening up the game with back-to-back walks to Dylan Harris and Michael Busch. An Aaron Sabato ground out advanced the runners, setting up an RBI ground out from UNC short stop Danny Serretti (2-for-3, three RBIs). Ike Freeman (3-for-4, two RBIs) brought Busch home on an RBI single to left field, making the score 2-0 after one.

Boston College cut the Tar Heels’ lead in half with an RBI single in the second inning, and managed to hold North Carolina without scoring in the bottom of the inning.

North Carolina extended its lead in the third inning after Michael Busch led off with a double, and then scored on a wild pitch. Ashton McGee brought another run home with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly, before the Tar Heels stranded the other two runners.

The Tar Heels increased their lead to six in the fifth inning on a Dallas Tessar single with the bases loaded. They quickly relinquished their big lead by giving the Eagles four runs in the top of the sixth inning.

With a 7-5 lead going in to the bottom of the sixth, North Carolina dropped three runs on Boston College, extending the lead to 10-5 with just three frames left.

The Eagles never managed to score again, though the Tar Heels added a few more insurance runs in the eighth inning. Busch, who went 4-for-5 on the game, knocked in his third and fourth RBIs of the game with a 2-run home run over the left field wall.

The Tar Heels advanced to their 12th ACC title game, and first since 2017. They’re looking for their first conference championship since 2013, which would be their seventh in program history.

Fifth-seeded North Carolina will take on the winner of the Georgia Tech and NC State game at 12:00 p.m. EST Sunday afternoon.
