Although Felton wasn’t recruited by Williams he still he thrived under the new UNC system. As a junior Felton sacrificed more and truly became a leader for the Tar Heels. Felton was on the first team that won a National Championship for Williams, and he paved the way for point guards to come.

Felton was the point guard that started it all under Williams. His junior year totals were the best of his career, and he knew exactly how and when to push the pace.

He set the standard for UNC point guards after him with his toughness, high basketball IQ, and leadership qualities. The game that truly showed Felton’s importance was the first game of the 2004-05 season. Felton was suspended for violating the NCAA’s summer basketball rules (he played a different basketball camp than some of his teammates) and the Tar Heels lost to Santa Clara 77-66 the first game of the season.

Once Felton came back to the lineup the Tar Heels went on a 14 game winning streak. Coincidence?

Overall,  Tar Heels fans have been blessed to see elite point guards come through this program in recent memory. Most of them are a candidate for the Cousy Award, or in route to another National Championship for the program.
